Movement Cards
Woodland Animals and Seasonal Trees

Bring your dance classes to life with our Woodland Animal and Seasonal Tree Movement Cards, designed to support creative movement, preschool dance, and early childhood education through play-based, thematic learning. Inspired by the Children's Book Tree, by Britta Teckentrup this versatile resource helps dancers explore woodland animals and the changing seasons while building foundational dance skills and concepts.

Each set of cards features engaging, child-friendly prompts that guide dancers through locomotor movements (galloping, crawling, flying) and non-locomotor movements (growing, swaying, blooming). Together, they create a complete learning experience that connects theme, movement, and concept, making it easy for teachers to integrate storytelling, obstacle courses, and group activities into their classes.

Perfect for creative dance, preschool ballet, and early childhood classrooms, these movement cards support key dance concepts such as positions (on/off, inside/outside), pathways, levels, and sequencing. Use them for freeze dance, obstacle courses, story dances, and collaborative choreography while encouraging imagination, coordination, and whole-child development.

Ideal for dance teachers, studio owners, and early childhood educators, this resource provides a fun, flexible, and educational approach to teaching dance through nature, seasons, and movement exploration.

How to use the Cards

These movement cards can be used in a variety of engaging ways to bring your theme to life while reinforcing dance concepts and skills. From guided story dances and obstacle courses to creative choreography and interactive games, each activity encourages dancers to explore movement, make connections, and learn through play. The flexibility of these cards allows you to adapt activities for different ages, skill levels, and class settings while keeping dancers actively involved and inspired.

The Download includes 8 game Ideas to include in your classes with some examples below:

  • Game 1: Woodland Animal Freeze Dance - Spread the Woodland Animal Movement Cards in a circle or place them in a pile. As music plays, dancers travel through the space using the movement from the card they selected (or you can call out different cards). When the music stops, dancers freeze in a shape that matches their animal or a seasonal tree shape (e.g., tall tree, swaying branches, falling leaves). This game reinforces quick transitions, listening skills, and connecting movement to both animal actions and seasonal imagery.
  • Game 2: Obstacle Course Cueing - Create a Story Dance Pathway™ Obstacle Course using props and assign a Woodland Animal Movement Card to each station. As dancers move through the course, they perform the movement prompted by each card. Layer in Seasonal Trees Movement Cards by assigning tree shapes or actions between stations, helping dancers explore transitions and spatial concepts throughout the pathway.
  • Game 3: Build Your Own Dance (Recommended for older dancers 7-10) - Give each dancer (or small group) one Woodland Animal Movement Card and one Seasonal Trees Movement Card. Dancers collaborate to sequence their movements into a short dance, combining animal actions with tree shapes or seasonal changes. Encourage them to think about order (beginning, middle, end) and how their movements connect, building creativity, sequencing skills, and group collaboration.
  • Game 4: Seasonal Story Dance - Using the book ‘Tree’ by Britta Teckentrup as inspiration, guide dancers in sequencing the Seasonal Trees Movement Cards to tell the story of a tree across the four seasons. Dancers move from spring growth to summer fullness, fall changes, and winter stillness, embodying how the tree transforms over time. Encourage smooth transitions between each card to build sequencing skills and deepen their understanding of seasonal progression
