dance dance HOORAY Tap with Dance to Learn®
Polar Penguins Tap for ages 5-7

The Polar Penguins Tap Lesson Plan is a Conceptualized-Thematic Lesson Plan. The Lesson Plan serves as a foundational exploration of tap technique through the lens of penguins. In this engaging lesson, young dancers will play pretend with imaginary penguin pals, fostering a deeper understanding of both tap skills and musical concepts.

  • How Does A Penguin Move The students will brainstorm descriptive words for how a penguin moves, and then collaborate on tap steps that a penguin might do, with technical explorations of movements such as chugs, heel drops, toe drops, crawls, caboodles and more. These exercises emphasize creative thinking as well as isolating different sounds and reviewing skills as they lay the groundwork for their tap journey.
  • Slippery Ice Shuffles Imagining that they are sliding on the ice, the students will explore shuffles and shuffle hops at different tempos and feels, while, focusing on getting their foot in ready position and using the correct part of their shoe.
  • Surfing Penguins Like a surfing penguin, students will work on the elements of a proper shuffle ballchange with a focus on shifting weight, and clear sounds. This segment of the lesson will enhance their understanding of how to do a step equally with the right and left while improving their balance.
  • Iceberg Cramp Rolls & Penguin Eggs This part of the lesson will use the fun of egg shakers, to feel the downbeat, while executing flaps, crawls, and paradiddles. Dancers will also be introduced to the coordination of cramp rolls using the imagery of stepping from iceberg to iceberg. Top it off with a tap dance obstacle course to tie it all together!
