Polar Penguins Tap for ages 3-5

The Polar Penguins Tap Lesson Plan is a Conceptualized-Thematic Lesson Plan. The Lesson Plan serves as a foundational exploration of tap technique through the lens of penguins. In this engaging lesson, young dancers will play pretend with imaginary penguin pals, fostering a deeper understanding of both tap skills and musical concepts.

  • Penguin Flippers The students will pretend that they have flippers too, through technical explorations of movements such as toe drops, heel drops, toe taps, heel taps and more. These exercises emphasize the importance of isolating different sounds and body control as they lay the groundwork for their tap journey.
  • Penguin Party Imagining that they are dancing around an iceberg, students will explore traveling tap steps like, controlled marches, heel-toe walks and jump-claps. These movements improve spatial awareness, develop our listening skills, and strengthen overall coordination.
  • Slippery Shuffles Like a slip-sliding penguin, students will work on the elements of a proper shuffle step with a focus on shifting weight, and clear sounds, . This segment of the lesson will enhance their understanding of how to execute a clear shuffle while improving their static balance.
  • Penguin Eggs The final part of the lesson will use the fun of egg shakers to feel the downbeat, and practice a beginning tap crawl while pretending to care for your penguin egg.
